Dark Matters

We produced a series of 'moving light' visuals reflecting the ephemeral elements of light, motion and darkness for the Dark Matters exhibition at the Whitworth Art Gallery. Renowned London-based digital artists FIELD translated this into digital sculptures, with these 'objects' eventually taking the shape of typography spelling out the name of the exhibition across outdoor advertising, printed collateral, onscreen and online.

The process started with hand gestures, drawing letterforms in the air and recording these with a kinect sensor. With a character somewhere between the organic, artificial and mechanical the rich lyrical colours and complex textures build a sense of mystery, tension and impermanence. The objects were then animated around a fragile and graceful bespoke soundscape by Berlin based composer and sound designer David Kamp.
