Where in the World Wide Web is Manchester, and what does it look like? This was the question to which Marketing Manchester asked to us to respond. Capturing and quantifying the research would enable Marketing Manchester progress their online marketing strategy and advance its website, visitmanchester.com.
An online survey and a network of social media sites asked recipients from across the globe about the digital journey they take when deciding upon a city break. From day visitors to week-long tourists, the results of the survey demonstrated the main search engines used and common websites utilised. The results of the research have informed the revitalised visitmanchester site.
To outline Manchester’s online presence, we examined the sites' accessibility, quality, connectivity, consistency, dissemination and popularity. Crossing unseen viral pathways and identifying influential websites and bloggers, we searched the web to capture those sites that profile and style the city. The results allowed us not only to present a report of the research, it also formed the graphical structure of Manchester’s online presence – the city’s digital map.
Shaped around the city’s boundaries, we defined Manchester digital map with 18 colour-coded routes, a collection of mega hubs with a node and external link for each site on the atlas.
